Char Dham Yatra – A Journey to Divine Salvation
Uttarakhand, also known as Devbhoomi or the Land of Gods, is home to numerous temples and welcomes devotees all year round. Among the countless religious sites and circuits that devotees visit in Uttarakhand, one of the most prominent is the Char Dham Yatra. This Yatra or pilgrimage is a tour of four holy sites - Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath – nestled high up in the Himalayas. In Hindi, 'char' means four and 'dham' refers to religious destinations.

Embark on a sacred journey to the revered Char Dham of Uttarakhand — a spiritual circuit that has inspired millions of devotees for centuries. Nestled in the majestic Himalayas, this pilgrimage offers not only divine blessings but also breathtaking natural beauty and inner peace.

Important Information
  • Registration: Mandatory, available through the Official Uttarakhand Tourist Care website.
  • Best Time to Visit: May-October is generally considered best, though monsoon (July-August) risks landslides.
  • Entry Restriction: The Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) has initiated a policy to bar non-Hindus from entering the inner sanctums of Kedarnath and Badrinath.
The holy Char Dham includes:
  • Yamunotri Temple – The source of the sacred Yamuna River, symbolizing purity and devotion. 
  • Gangotri Temple – Origin of the holy Ganges, representing life and spiritual cleansing. 
  • Kedarnath Temple – One of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, set amidst stunning snow-capped peaks. 
  • Badrinath Temple – Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, a sacred shrine for attaining salvation (Moksha).

Day 1
Arrive Dehradun / Haridwar

Upon arrival at Dehradun Airport or Haridwar Railway Station meeting with the driver followed by
transfer to hotel.
If time permits visit Daksheshwar Mahadev Temple, an ancient temple dedicated to lord Shiva.
● In the evening, witness the mesmerizing Ganga Arti at Har Ki Pauri. It starts around sunset
(around 5:30-7:00 PM), with priests performing rituals, lighting oil lamps, and singing
devotional hymns.
● Post Arti, explore local shops near Har Ki Pauri for souvenirs and you can try some famous
street food like kichadi - sabzi, aloo puri, and sweets like rabri and jalebi.
Return to your hotel for rest.

Day 2
Haridwar - Barkot (185 Km / 06-07 Hr)

The journey starts from Haridwar in the early morning after a dip (bathing) in the holy Ganga River.
After having breakfast, drive towards Barkot via Dehradun & Mussoorie. En route take a brief stop at
Kempty Falls near Mussoorie to stretch your legs and enjoy the waterfall. Continue your journey
through winding mountain roads with breathtaking views. Reach Barkot by late afternoon and check
in to your hotel. The town is known for its lush greenery and serene surroundings. Take a walk
around the area to help acclimatize to the altitude. Evening at leisure to rest and prepare for the
trek to Yamunotri.

Day 3
Barkot- Yamunotri (45 Km Drive / 05 Km Trek) Yamunotri - Barkot (05 Km Trek / 45 Km Drive)

Early in the morning, after breakfast, we left for Yamunotri. Depart early for a drive to Jankichatti,
the base point for the Yamunotri trek. The drive offers spectacular views of lush green hills and the
Yamuna River.
From Jankichatti begin the 5 km trek to Yamunotri. The trek path is well-paved but can be steep. If
you prefer, you can also ride a horse or pony to reach Yamunotri without much walking (on direct
payment)
Yamunotri, is a significant pilgrimage site and the source of the Yamuna River. Visit Yamunotri
Temple, the main attraction. This ancient temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna.
After your spiritual rituals, start your descent back trek to Jankichatti in the afternoon.
Return to Barkot by evening.

Day 4
Barkot- Uttarkashi (85 Km / 03-04 Hrs.)

After breakfast, depart for Uttarkashi. The drive offers picturesque views of hills and valleys.
On the Way Stop at Prakateshwar Cave: A naturally formed limestone cave located enroute to
Uttarkashi. It has unique stalactite and stalagmite formations that resemble Shiva Lingas.
Upon reaching Uttarkashi, check-in to your hotel.
Visit the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple, an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The evening
Arti here is a serene and divine experience.
If time permits, enjoy a peaceful evening walk along the banks of the Bhagirathi River.

Day 5
Uttarkashi - Gangotri (100 Km / 04 Hrs.) Gangotri – Uttarkashi (100 Km / 04 Hrs.)

After an early breakfast, depart for Gangotri*. The road to Gangotri passes through stunning
landscapes, and you can enjoy picturesque views of the snow-capped peaks.
Enroute visit, Gangnani, a small hamlet with natural hot springs. Take a relaxing dip in the hot water
and continue your journey.
⮚ Reach Gangotri by noon. Visit the Gangotri Temple, one of the most revered shrines dedicated
to Goddess Ganga.
⮚ If time permits, explore the Surya Kund Waterfall & Tapovan Art Gallery for a unique
experience.
⮚ Enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the Harsil Valley on driving back to Uttarkashi. Start your
return journey to Uttarkashi.

Day 6
Uttarkashi - Guptkashi (200 Km / 08 Hrs.)

After breakfast, start early for a long journey towards Guptkashi. The drive takes you through scenic
routes and river valleys.
Reach Guptkashi by evening. Check into your hotel and take a rest after a long journey.
You can visit Ardh Narishwar Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, depicting the deity in a half-male, half-
female form symbolizing the union of Shiva and Parvati (if time permits).

Day 7
Guptkashi - Kedarnath (30 Km Drive / 18 Km Trek)

After a delicious breakfast at your hotel, your tour to Kedarnath begins.
You have to travel 30 km from Guptkashi to Sonprayag and take a sharing jeep up to 5 Km from
Sonprayag to reach Gaurikund.
From Gaurikund starts an 18 Km trek to Kedarnath. The trail offers breathtaking views of the
majestic peaks and cascading rivers. You can hire a pony or a palanquin if needed (on direct payment
basis)
Upon arrival check in at hotel.
If time permits, visit Kedarnath temple and participate in the Kedarnath evening Arti, which is an
unforgettable spiritual experience.
Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel in Kedanath.

Day 8
Kedarnath - Guptkashi (18 Km trek / 30 Km drive)

Wake up early in the morning before sunrise and after bathing, reach the temple at 4:45 am to
celebrate the Abhishek of Kedarnath Shiva and morning Arti.
After Darshan and puja leave the temple and return to the hotel.
Post breakfast, begin your descent to Gaurikund. Take breaks and enjoy the tranquil beauty of the
Himalayas.
Upon reaching Gaurikund, take a sharing jeep for Sonprayag and drive towards Guptkashi.
Check into your hotel.
Dinner and overnight stay at a hotel in Guptkashi.

Day 9
Guptkashi- Badrinath (195 Km / 07 Hrs.)

Early morning check-out after breakfast.
Depart for Badrinath. The road is winding, and you will pass through scenic towns and rivers.
⮚ Visit Pandukeshwar, an ancient village in Uttarakhand, believed to be established by King
Pandu of the Mahabharata, and is home to the sacred Yog Dhyan Badri Temple.
⮚ Upon arrival check into your hotel and freshen up.
⮚ If time permits, visit the Badrinath Temple and attend the evening Arti. Explore the
surroundings and enjoy the peace of the temple area.
Back to the hotel and take a rest.

Day 10
Badrinath - Rudraprayag (150 Km / 05-06 Hrs.)

Participate in the morning Arti and seek blessings. Explore the surroundings and enjoy the peace of
the temple area. Explore Mana Village, the last village on the Indo-China border. Visit Vyas Gufa and
Ganesh Gufa, two significant spiritual spots in the village.
After breakfast, drive to Rudraprayag.
Enroute Take a break at Joshimath and visit the Narsingh Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to
Lord Vishnu's Narsingh (half-lion, half-human) incarnation and serves as the winter abode for the
idol of Badrinath. The route passes through Vishnuprayag, Karnaprayag, and Nandprayag, each
known for the confluence of rivers.
Reach Rudraprayag by late afternoon and check into your hotel. Rest for the evening or explore the
small town and its riverbank.

Day 11
Rudraprayag - Rishikesh (136 Km / 04-05 Hr)

After breakfast, drive towards Rishikesh. The road journey passes through scenic landscapes and
valleys. On arrival, check into your hotel and relax. Visit iconic landmarks like Ram Jhula, Janki Setu,
Parmarth Niketan and Geeta Bhawan.
Attending evening Ganga Arti at Triveni Ghat in Rishikesh is a captivating evening ritual where
devotees offer prayers to the Ganges River, accompanied by chanting, music, and the lighting of
lamps, creating a serene and spiritual atmosphere.
Return to the hotel.

Day 12
Rishikesh – Dehradun Airport (23 Km / 01 Hrs.)

After breakfast, drive towards Dehradun Airport or Haridwar Railway Station for your departure
flight/Train. Arrive and conclude your spiritual journey with cherished memories.
